Helping Students with Disabilities do something they love.

For students in the Lake Washington School District

Awards up to $1,000 help students pursue activities, hobbies and experiences outside the school day –
building confidence, friendships and a sense of belonging.

Who can apply?

Lake Washington School District students through age 21, including elementary, middle and high school students. Eligible students:

• Have a current 504 Plan or Individualized Education Program (IEP); or

• Have a qualifying disability or impairment, even without an IEP or 504 plan.

Applications are accepted year-round. Awards are not merit-based and do not depend on grades or academic achievement.

How to apply

Tell us what you would love to do. We will follow up about your idea and costs. Final awards require approval by the Kirkland Kiwanis Foundation board.

Students and families are welcome to apply. A parent or legal guardian must submit applications for students under 18, while students age 18 may apply independently.

Students and families are welcome to apply. For students under 18, a parent or legal guardian must submit the application and provide their contact information. Students age 18 may apply independently or with assistance. Teachers and counselors are welcome to help students and families prepare their applications.

Information submitted through this application will be used to evaluate eligibility and administer the Shinstrom Award. Applications will be reviewed by authorized Kirkland Kiwanis volunteers and handled with care.

What happens after I apply?

1. We review your application.
The volunteer Shinstrom Award Committee reviews applications and may contact you with questions.

2. We may request additional information.
For promising applications, we may ask for a short teacher or counselor recommendation and more detailed activity costs.

3. Approved awards help pay for your activity.
Awards are subject to approval by the Kirkland Kiwanis Foundation’s Board of Directors. Funds are used for approved activities, lessons, programs, or supplies rather than unrestricted cash payments.

Honoring Dick Shinstrom’s Legacy

Dick Shinstrom devoted more than 65 years to the Kiwanis Club of Kirkland, earning the affection and respect of fellow members through his dedication to helping children.

Following Dick’s passing in 2016, the Dick Shinstrom Memorial Fund was established to honor him and his remarkable service to the Kirkland community.

Today, the award continues Dick’s legacy by helping students with disabilities discover new interests, build confidence, form friendships, and experience the joy of doing something they love.
